Area Information

Situated to the north of Oakwood and East Barnet, Cockfosters spans the London Boroughs of Enfield and Barnet. Probably most familiar for being at the end of the Piccadilly Line, it’s also known for the inclusive Chickenshed Theatre Company. Set up in 1973, the theatre company is now a registered charity and brings together people from all social and economic backgrounds, races and abilities to study the art of performance.

Just to the east is the historically significant Trent Country Park. Set in 413 acres the park offers meadows, enchanting brooks, lakes and ancient woodland, as well as historical sites. The park is a relic of the Royal Hunting Forest of Enfield Chase, which was mentioned in the Domesday Book. The park also contains the infamous Camlet Moat. The moat is said to be haunted by the ghost of Geoffrey De Mandeville, one of the great magnates of the reign of William the Conqueror. In addition, the park offers sports facilities, horse-riding tracks, cycle paths, a café, a tea room and an animal sanctuary.

The Piccadilly line reached the area in July 1933. It kick-started the area’s most significant building boom. New streets were laid out to the south-west of the station and by 1939 much of the area had been developed. The introduction of the Green Belt in the 1940s restricted any further development to the north of the station. Any remaining gaps from the 1930s building boom were filled in during the early 1950s. The continuing Green Belt policy means that to this day residents are only a few minutes’ walk from open farmland.

The tube journey from Cockfosters to King’s Cross is direct and takes 29 minutes. With the area’s proximity to green space, as well as offering an easy commute to central London, it's attractive place for anyone wanting the best of both worlds.
