Unlock the Potential in Your Garden

Unlock the Potential in Your Garden

By Peter Barry

Now that Spring has officially started and the weather has improved (slightly) prospective buyers will place greater importance on the garden as an attractive and safe place for the parents to relax and the kids to play. If you are thinking of selling the good news is that whatever the size of your garden a few inexpensive improvements can score points with prospective buyers.

  • The most important part of any garden is the patio, during the summer months this can become an extension of the house so spend some time getting this area right. Pull out any weeds and if the paving is looking a bit grubby consider hiring a pressure washer to bring it back to its original colour. If the surface is beyond repair decking can be an attractive and affordable alternative to laying new slabs.
  • Why not invest in some attractive garden furniture and a few large pot plants, create an area where buyers will imagine themselves relaxing. This type of improvement is the best of all: one that will help with your sale and you can transfer to your new home.
  • Keeping a family garden tidy while you are still living at a property is not easy. Why not clear out the garage or shed so that they can be used as a temporary storeroom during viewings. It will save doing it later when you come to move.
  • If you are struggling with a large, high maintenance garden, hiring a gardener for a few hours will be money well spent. Once the initial work has been done you should be able to keep on top of things until the sale goes through.
  • If you live in a family house think about how secure the garden is for the children. Ponds or large water features should be avoided as should structures that obscure large parts of the garden, such as pergolas, as parents find it difficult to relax if they can’t see their young children out the back window.

Having put the effort in to give your garden the “wow” factor make its presence felt from within the house. Prior to viewings make sure all rear curtains and blinds are fully open and the glass is sparkling. Then stand back and enjoy the compliments that you receive.
